Cognitive Hypnotherapy

Cognitive Hypnotherapy is significantly different from traditional Hypnotherapy as it draws on recent discoveries and ideas from Evolutionary Psychology, Positive Psychology, Cognitive Theory and a form of communication psychology called Neuro Linguistic Programming, and incorporates them into a modern idea of hypnosis to provide a framework for therapy. It does not advocate one single approach as the answer to all of life’s problems but instead it is tailored for the specific needs of each client.

Hypnosis is an altered state of awareness, a natural hypnotic trance; everyone goes in and out of everyday, without perhaps knowing it. Have you ever been so absorbed in a book or film that the hours seemed to fly by? Have you ever experienced driving somewhere and arriving at your destination without being aware of exactly how you got there? Or lit a cigarette and put it out without remembering the process of smoking it, or eaten something you feel you shouldn't have whilst on a diet? Or been in a meeting where every minute seems like an hour? Realised that someone was talking to you, but you were ‘miles away’?  All of these are examples of ‘common everyday trance’, which all of us can do.  Studies have shown that we spend 90% of our time in such states. By using these safe and naturally occurring trance states, I will be able to speak directly with your unconscious mind to find solutions to existing problems by uncovering the thoughts, feelings and memory patterns that led to the problem and which continue to maintain it.

Therapy only needs to be a natural light trance state, so that you will be in total control of your actions at all times. In fact, the state of hypnosis is one of heightened awareness where it is possible for your mind to be aware of many more things than is possible in the conscious state. You can talk to me throughout and can stop therapy at anytime. You will not do or say anything that you do not want.

There is no definitive explanation of what hypnosis is and it’s interesting to note that everyone experiences it in a very different unique way.  What hypnotherapy is likely to give is a gift of relaxation, calmness and positive thinking by ‘washing’ you in an endorphin bath, which releases serotonin, flushes out the toxins, and bolsters the immune system. These affects may continue for several hours or days after a session has finished.
